Coupé version of the Lancer wasn’t designed to set the world alight, being based on the mid-line Lancer saloon. But the rear wheel drive platform and pony car styling have endeared the Celeste to a new generation of fans. When new, the Celeste was offered with a 1.4- or 1.6-litre engine, and following a late-life facelift, a 2-litre. None were exciting to drive, and were overshadowed by the Toyota Celica, but excellent reliability and build quality meant that owners weren’t troubled by ‘70s style breakdowns. Replaced by the even more forgettable Cordia in 1982.
