Cooper had more experience with A-series engines in the 1100cc racing class and put that knowledge to good use with the first Mini-Cooper S. Its enlarged 1071cc engine managed 70bhp and there were larger disc brakes to cope with its extra performance. Nothing much changed on the outside; the S looked the same as the Cooper save for ‘S’ badges on the bonnet and boot, and ventilated steel wheels. Inside, the upholstery was finished to more luxurious Mini Super De Luxe specification. A petite but potent rocket but even better was soon to follow...
