1966-1973 MERCURY Cougar specifications

The Cougar was conceived to lower the average age of the typical Lincoln-Mercury customer, and it did it with some style – and a Ford Mustang platform. The 3in stretch in wheelbase and headlamps hidden behind a slatted grille were Cougar identifiers. Styling was tweaked to look more ‘European’, and it proved something of a hit for Ford’s luxury division. The engine range was wide, with a 200bhp 289cu in the entry level – and it was topped by the legendary 390bhp 427. Overshadowed by the Mustang, despite a Bond cameo in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.
