Mercedes threw everything but the kitchen sink at this technical tour de force, designed to be bought by governments rather than mere business magnates. They weighed in at 2.5 tonnes (or more for the long wheelbase seven-seater Pullman), and that was before the bullet-proof glass was added. There’s air suspension, vacuum central locking, two heating and ventilation systems, and to haul it around, a new 6.3-litre V8 engine with Bosch fuel injection. The limo stayed in production for 18 years and notched up a remarkable number of sales.
