Provocatively dubbed ‘the best cars in the world’ when new, the V8-engined versions of the S-class also become one of the few truly deserving winners of the Car of the Year award. Their build quality and equipment levels set new standards and you can still be impressed by driving one that’s over 30 years old. Model numbers represent the 3.5 and 4.5-litre V8s, and there’s also a 450 SEL with an extra six inches in the wheelbase, mostly for the benefit of rear legroom. Good ones are still not that expensive to buy, but a poor one could quickly become so.
