Mercedes Benz 280SL Auto 1971 The Pagoda Mercedes Benz is an Icon of Classic Motoring. Its stunning looks have made it so since launch in 1963 at the Geneva Motor Show. The model ran until 1971 when it was replaced by the 107 Series SL which was a much larger car. The car we offer for sale here is simply stunning, and is about as near to new as any car could be. Finished in Red with a pale grey leather interior, it’s just out of a massive three year restoration at one of the Country’s leading Mercedes Specialists. Three years is a long time for any restoration, and this car which began its life in the USA was remarkably rot free before work started, however it was stripped mechanically, and taken back to bare metal for a total nut and bolt rebuild. To say this car looks like it’s just left the factory in Stuttgart is almost an understatement. The photographs say more than words ever can as the car is totally stunning. Nothing has been left to chance. The interior, the engine bay, the underside looks brand new, and the paint finish…… I think it’s the best finish I've ever seen. The chrome, what hasn’t been replaced has been re-chromed to the highest standard. The hard top has been fully restored. The Hood is new. Carpets, again all new. I doubt there is a better Pagoda for sale anywhere right now, and at only £99,950 has excellent potential for the future. If you are seeking a Pagoda, either to use or as a serious investment then you must not miss this car. It truly is an absolutely stunning example of the Marque.
Quality abounds with this beautifully restored Mercedes-Benz Pagoda, surely the finest on the market today. First delivered in June 1970 to Mr. Peter Flagg of Meriden, Connecticut as a birthday gift for his wife, the Arabian Grey coachwork chosen by the Flagg’s for their love of grey horses and still sported today is an unusual yet perfectly suited colour for this elegant roadster. Contrasted with vibrant red leather and dark grey soft-top it’s a handsome and rare combination that really appeals. This car has had just five keepers from new, passing via two short tenures in Connecticut to prominent M-B Owners’ Club Member and president of the W113 Club of America, Mr. Douglas Kim. Now a New York resident, our Mercedes continued to live a coveted life being showcased at local car events and becoming particularly well-known to fellow model enthusiasts. Fast-forward to 2003, when this car was purchased by Ms. Nicola Colley who repatriated her Mercedes to UK shores in late 2005, some 33 years after it first left our Continent. It was used regularly until late 2011, after which, starting from early 2012, it became the subject of a comprehensive nut-and-bolt restoration involving a bare-metal strip and respray, and a complete engine and gearbox overhaul by a host of experienced specialists, not least, celebrated Mercedes-Benz authority, Cardock Classics of Dublin who have painstakingly rebuilt this car to original specification. With its classic status today continually rising, the Mercedes-Benz 280SL is a truly timeless classic considered to be one of the most comfortable and civilised sports cars on the market, and our car, with full UK V5C registration and fresh MOT test certificate is worthy of the highest consideration.

Truly one of the best, a Mercedes Benz 280SL R107 with just 11,433 miles. EQUIPMENT Light-alloy bonnet, easy-closing doors, detachable colour coded hard top, retractable soft top, impact zones, anti-burst locks, strengthened windscreen pillars, parking lamps, three speed wipers, individually adjusted temperature zones, headlamp adjustment, oil pressure gauge, fuel reserve light, non-slip steering wheel, lockable glove compartment, fire extinguisher, power assisted steering. Factory fitted options include; 4-speed automatic transmission with tempomat, Becker Mexico Cassette radio, central locking, air conditioner, Australia version. EXTERIOR This classic Mercedes-Benz Sport Leicht (SL) is finished in factory original Silver Green Metallic, (Code 861H – Silbergrun). The paintwork boasts a magnificent finish and show winning shine, commensurate with the incredible low mileage and cosseted existence this superb car has enjoyed. The instantly recognisable lines of the R107 series, the R prefix to denote a Roadster as opposed to W for Wagon, are elegant yet subtle and this example is surely one of the best there is. The Black hood, (Code 740), is as new, as are the side and rear hood windows. The original colour coded hard top remains with the car and is in remarkable condition. All the chrome has a mirror finish and trim sections and rubbers are virtually as new. Features of a 1970’s pre-facelift example include the single, smaller and more ornate door mirror. An exceptional vehicle from an era when the name Mercedes-Benz stood for exemplary build quality and engineering excellence. INTERIOR The pristine factory trimmed interior is upholstered in delightful 1970’s Bamboo colour with matching colour scheme carpets. The seats are beautifully preserved with no discolouration or cracking and only slight stretching and the deep pile carpeting throughout looks almost new. The fascia is perfect and all the gauges, controls and electrics operate exactly as they should, including the factory optional Becker Mexico Cassette radio, the most expensive unit available when new! Found inside the glovebox is even the two hard top levers kept in the original black pouch, and other features of an early R107 SL are manual window winders and the seat belt holding clips, still intact. Service stickers are still visible in the door shuts. The boot area has the factory supplied toolkit as well as the original rubber matting and bare metal rear bulkhead as fitted to earlier example’s. The inner rear light clusters have retained the manufacture stamps. Hugely advanced ergonomically, the benchmark for all makers of the era. ENGINE & TRANSMISSION This 1976 example, one of only 1,099 280SL’s built that year, produces 185bhp at 6000rpm and 175lb/ft of torque to achieve a top speed of 124mph and 0-60mph in 10.01 seconds. The engine bay is spotless and retains all manufacturer stickers, plates, panel stampings, and even the original battery warning tag! The factory wax can be seen on components revealing the originality of this car impossible to replicate. The four-speed automatic transmission is flawless in operation with positive kickdown. Supremely reliable and perfect in operation. WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES The original wheels remain fitted with the colour coded and chromium plated 12 hole trims which are in excellent order, with two pieces showing only very light scratches. Period matching Michelin MXV 185 HR14 tyres are fitted and remain virtually unused with nobbles fully intact. The unused spare wheel is shod in the factory Pirelli tyre. Dual-circuit servo assisted brakes with 278mm front discs and 279mm rear drums offer steady stopping capabilities. HISTORY FILE A car with an interesting life! This example was ordered in late 1975 for an Australian resident through the company name, Zawawi Trading. Registered in 1976, the first owner opted for factory collection in Stuttgart, Germany, and the car remained in Switzerland/England for the first 12 months in order to avoid import duty in Australia. Shortly after the cars arrival in Australia, the owner sadly passed away and unable to part with the car for sentimental reasons, the owners widow kept the car in a dry garage for many years. Resisting several offers to buy the car over the years, wanting to preserve the memory of her late husband, the car was used only very sparingly explaining the very low 11,433 miles covered. Eventually, the original owner’s Step Son brought the car into the UK in July 2016 whereby a well-known Aston Martin Dealer purchased the car. A signed letter from the family of the original owner is kept in the history file where all this information is thankfully recorded for the next owner to enjoy. Now fully UK registered with all import duty paid, the car was sent for MOT in November 2017 as well as a full inspection, recommission and main service. An invoice in the history dated November 2017 for £1,793.16 documents the work carried out. Appealing to any serious collector wanting one of the very best preserved examples in existence, this 280SL will delight on every conceivable level. MOT November 2018, HPI clear. The 230SL delivered perfectly, proving immediately appealing to customers seeking a charming and sporty car with clean styling and captivating details. The clarity and simplicity of design continued under the hood with technical advancements including Bosch fuel-injection, overhead-cam six cylinder engine, and syncromesh transmission, delivering reliable but brisk performance. Description Having spent most of its life in the States, this 1969 Mercedes 280SL Pagoda was in a remarkably rust free state – one of the best we’ve ever seen, in fact. Residing in a dry state meant the car was able to avoid the rust problems that often plague classic Mercedes of this era, and we were astonished by the originality of the shell. There were no signs of previous accident damage or previous welding, and even the smallest details were still correct to how they would’ve left the production line – the original seams and spot welds, for example, are still visible; details which are often masked by previous paintwork and body repairs. Taking all these original features into account meant it was quite possibly the best 280SL Pagoda shell we’d ever come across. With the car’s previous owner having spent a considerable sum with us on a full body restoration, repaint in DB180 Silver, full conversion to European spec, new hood and partial interior re-trim, in addition to numerous smaller improvements throughout the car, we relished the opportunity to add it to our stock, as we know the car intimately. The restoration is fully documented with over 400 images, which will be suppli

Description We’re currently completing a restoration of this California spec, LHD 1970 280SL Pagoda with automatic transmission. The shell has been built to concours standard, freshly painted in its original colour of DB 050 white and is currently in the final stages of re-fit. (SOLD) Assembled at the Mercedes-Benz factory in Stuttgart, Germany, during the summer of 1969, this fine 280SL left the factory on July 18 that year. As new, it was finished in DB568 Signal Red, with matching hard top, and trimmed with a black MB Tex interior. The 280SL was equipped for the home market, and found its first owner in the Duisburg area, in Germany's Ruhr region. The car's early history remains unknown, but at some point the Mercedes-Benz migrated to the United States, where it has remained since. The 280SL's exterior was finished in the current black, and it is apparent that many mechanical and cosmetic refurbishments have been performed over the years. It should be noted that the car's engine number does not match the one listed on the factory built records, and suggests that another unit has been installed. Displaying good panel gaps, this 280SL has that outstanding quality feel so indicative of the marque. Complete with hardtop, Becker radio, books, tools and copies of the factory build sheets, this fine example of the legendary Pagoda-top 280SL is ready for its next caretaker. Please note that this vehicle is titled as a 1970.

With its striking appearance, luxurious leather interior and excellent maintenance history, it is apparent that the car has been very well cared for over the years, showing only 52,000 miles. During a recent restoration, the roadster was refinished in a beautiful and correct shade of Mercedes Silver and contrasting Red upholstery. Great care was taken to retain the original factory “darts” and spot welds that collectors of authenticity look for on these cars. The upholstery was upgraded from the original MB-Tex material to full, genuine leather, using correct original factory patterns, while the top fabric remains original. Importantly, the car is still equipped
