Mercedes-Benz created a continuing success when it combined its competent, elegantly styled, luxurious 280 SE 111-series chassis with its 3,499 cc single overhead camshaft Bosch electronic fuel-injected V-8 engine. Introduced at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 1969, the hardtop coupe cost a hefty $13,766 in 1971, giving it exclusivity from day one. With 230 SAE brake horsepower, 232 ft-lb torque, transistorized ignition and a smooth four-speed automatic transmission, the 280 SE 3.5 was fast, comfortable and had superb roadholding. Ever since, 280 SE 3.5s have continued to satisfy collectors seeking the finest quality, luxury and performance. Strong examples continue to command as much prestige and respect as they did when they were new.
This 280 SE 3.5 was originally built as a coupe and received a conversion to the cabriolet body style in 2000 as documented by over $15,000 in receipts. It is finished in silver with a blue interior and has a power-operated top, brand new whitewall tires, floor-mounted shifter, Becker Europa radio and Behr air conditioning.
