Based on the W123 saloons, but with 10cm nipped out of the wheelbase, these pillarless coupés shared the same sumptuous interior. Top of the range was the fuel-injected 177bhp 280CE, while entry level was covered by the 230C, which put out 109bhp on carbs. Some markets got the in-between 280C with 156bhp, again on carbs. Both of those were dropped in 1980 to make way for the 230CE, which not only got fuel injection, but an new 2.3-litre engine to go with it. Output was now 136bhp, while the 280CE crept up to 185bhp.
