The ‘80s were an exciting time for Mercedes-Benz. It went down market to chase BMW, and did it in an inimitable style orchestrated by design chief Bruno Sacco. The 190E had done a great job of stealing 3-Series sales, but lacked a little of that car’s glamour. The 2.3E 2.3-16 was conceived for touring car racing, and thanks to a clever cylinder head from Cosworth, delivered ample power and torque to turn the staid looking car into a flying machine. The 1988 2.5-litre version, with 200bhp was even more exciting, Evo I and II models cost considerably more.
