The McLaren F1 belonging to Rowan Atkinson has been sold for a reported £8million
A McLaren F1, owned by the comedic actor and huge car enthusiast Rowan Atkinson, has been sold by UK dealer Taylor & Crawley. Although the price hasn’t been revealed, it’s though to be in excess of the £8m estimate given when the car went on sale in January.
This particular F1 isn’t a museum piece by any stretch of the imagination. Since he bought the car new in 1997, Atkinson has covered more than 41,000 miles in the 240mph supercar, with just a couple of incidents in the process. The F1’s notoriously knife-edge handling caught out Atkinson in on a wet day in 2011, leading to what is often thought to be the UK’s biggest single-vehicle insurance claim.
Returning to the McLaren factory for a full rebuild, the final bill came to somewhere in the region of £910,000. It was returned to perfect condition, but with the car’s ever increasing value, Atkinson felt he could no longer enjoy it on the road – so put it up for sale.
The car’s history obviously wasn’t a problem for the un-named UK buyer who has bought for the F1. Any other potential F1 buyers needn’t worry though, there will be another opportunity to buy a special LM-Spec McLaren at RM Sotheby’s Monterey auction in August…
