McLaren gave the task of engineering its roadgoing supercar to racecar designer Gordon Murray, and it was Murray's twin obsessions with lightness and driving purity that made the F1 what it was. Its 240mph top speed was almost a by-product, enabled by the quite extraordinary 6-litre V12 engine designed by BMW's Paul Roche. The Peter Stevens-styled three-seater was a masterpiece, but sales were slow and the planned production run was eventually cut short. Good news for anyone who has an F1 today, as values continue to rocket skywards…
