1972-1979 MAZDA RX4/929 specifications

Mazda persisted with the Wankel more than any other manufacturer, and through diligent development and fettling managed to make it work reasonably successfully. But the 929 was the last in the line of large saloons, killed in the end by a voracious for petrol – not good in the midst of a fuel-led recession. The RX4 coupé boasts ‘70s trans-Atlantic Japanese styling that just gets better with age, but predictably there aren’t many left now thanks to a proclivity for rusting. There’s an active following now, and rebuilds using modern components give acceptable engine life.
