Maserati GranTurismo: Buying guide and review (2007-present) Classic and Performance Car
Maserati GranTurismo Maserati GranTurismo Maserati GranTurismo Maserati GranTurismo Maserati GranTurismo Maserati GranTurismo Maserati GranTurismo
Maserati has been on a bit of a resurgence recently, and the GranTurismo released in 2007 has been instrumental in its recent good form. The original GranTurismo unveiled at the Geneva Motor show had a Ferrari derived 399bhp 4.2-litre V8 and a 2+2 chassis derived from the Quattroporte. The Pininfarina-penned bodywork was met with universal acclaim, and its inherent rightness is shown in the fact that it still turns heads despite little having been done to the basic shape in the intervening years.

Ride comfort was much improved over the Quattroporte and the interior was well equipped, seating four in comfort. One of the few early criticisms were that performance was somewhat blunted by the almost two ton weight, although this was addressed with an optional 4.7-litre V8 being introduced a few years later.

Overall the GranTurismo has been a moderate success for Maserati, and although its beginning to show its age today, it’s still a very accomplished and hugely desirable GT.

Which one to buy?

The GranTurismo has been in production for nine years now, and a number of variants have been released over the years. The standard GranTurismo is fitted with the 399bhp 4.2-litre V8 and while its looks, ride comfort and cruising ability are still comparable with more modern machinery, it requires a dedicated right foot to get meaningful acceleration from it.

The rest of the model range gets the 4.7-litre, V8 which puts out between 434 and 454bhp depending on which model it is fitted to. The improved low range response makes a big difference to the driving experience, however it’s the sublime exhaust note that will leave a lasting impression. The GranTurismo may be eclipsed in many ways by newer rivals but arguably none has a more stirring soundtrack. This and the timeless elegance of the design have ensured that these cars have remained as desirable as ever.

The MC Stradale was introduced in 2011 and is the most sports focussed of the range, with 110kg removed from the overall weight and power up to 454bhp. This helps the Stradale reach a maximum speed of 188mph.

If open air motoring is more your thing then there is also the GranCabrio model introduced in 2010, it is a 2+2 soft top convertible based on the GranTurismo S. Sportier versions include the GranCabrio Sport and MC, with slightly increased power outputs and more sport orientated suspension settings.
Build quality and reliability are much improved over previous generation Maseratis and depreciation has also not been as steep as expected.

The sweet spot in the range is the GranTurismo S in either 6 speed auto or sequential automatic guise. It received the desirable Skyhook suspension system as standard on the auto versions with it being an option on the sequential-auto cars. It was updated and renamed the GranTurismo Sport in 2012. The choice between gearboxes depends on whether you will be doing a lot of stop start driving, in which case the full auto is preferable, however for the occasional blast the sequential system with paddles is more engaging.

Common problems

Parts are widely available from Maserati and running costs are what one would expect of a top end sports tourer.

• Electrical gremlins are not as rampant as Maseratis of old, but there are a few things to look out for. Auto wipers can be erratic on earlier models and rear light clusters can play up, requiring reprogramming of the ECU to cure and in some cases a replacement unit.

• According to a few owners, random error warnings can pop up from time, but this can usually be traced back to a failing battery.

• Electric window motors can slow down with age.

• It’s not recommended to jump start a GranTurismo as voltage spikes can damage the electronics and airbags can be blown.

• Engines are Ferrari based and generally quite robust, but crankshaft oil seals and cam covers can leak oil. These are not a big issue to remedy. If the engine is not running smoothly, it could point to a faulty air-flow meter.

• Suspension rarely gives major problems, however due to the relatively high weight bushes and shock absorbers do wear out frequently. The Skyhook shocks are also pricey, so make sure the system is operating correctly.

• Brakes also take a fair amount of punishment thanks to the cars weight so check the disc and pad wear to see if replacement is imminent.

Summary and prices

The early 2007 and 2008 4.2-litre cars start from around £30,000 which shows a decent aversion to the horrible depreciation that cars of this type tend to go through. A low-mileage GranTurismo S can be found from £38,000 and up. Two year old cars trade around the £80,000 mark depending on specification, and this again shows decent value retention from new. Factory fresh MC Stradale retails for £110,000. GranCabrios are rarer and tend to command a slight premium over their coupe counterparts.

It is rare to find a sporty Italian grand tourer that makes sense to both the head and the heart, yet after nine years in production the GranTurismo still manages to offer a beguiling mix of practicality and desirability that is a hard act to follow.

Description This facelift 2009 Maserati GTS is one very beautiful supercar. Presented in Grigio Nero with black leather interior and 20inch special edition alloys, this is an interesting alternative to Maranello’s or Newport Pagnell’s super car coupes. For the 2009 GTS the engine was a new version of Maserati’s Ferrari derived aluminium V8 but with increased bore and stroke out to 4.7 litres. An active exhaust with shortcut valves lets you hear and feel every single one of the impressive 433bhp and 361 ft/lb of torque. 0-60 in 4.7 secs and a top speed of 183mph (governed), this is a seriously quick coupe. The sound of the car is operatic and truly does make your hair stand up. A tiptronic style automatic six-speed (automated manual) transaxle is used, Supplied by Graziano, this new unit replaces the GT’s ZF six-speed and employs a dry twin-plate clutch. Though not one of the newfangled twin-clutch gearboxes, it has many operating modes, and in the most aggressive the shift time is immeasurable. It is essentially used as a sequential manual gearbox. 360mm discs with aluminum bells haul the car down and she does feel more nimble on the road than you may think This is a very practical

The GranTurismo has to be one of the smoothest cars on the road, in more ways than one. It is not the fastest, smartest, or best value on the market, but the GranTurismo has panache in abundance. In this car, that's far more important than cold figures. Thoughts of comparisons float out the window when one sees the way the Pininfarina-designed sheetmetal floats and bends around the car's body with more visceral realism than a Rodin sculpture. The other cars don't look like the GranTurismo, and the interior's sumptuous hand-stitched surfaces make the others' seem more commonplace. There's even a tiny strip of leather on the edge of the steering-wheel shift paddles that constantly reminds the driver that this is a special car. Driving the GranTurismo is equally enchanting. On tight roads, the bite from the front tires and the excellent steering feel disguise the car's ample size. Fast, stylish and capable of covering transcontinental distances while keeping occupants and their designer luggage in the rarefied atmosphere to which they are accustomed. That's what GT motoring should be about and it sums up the Maserati GranTurismo. This Nero Carbonio example comes with black stitched Cr
