A white Lotus Elan S2, previously owned by Peter Sellers, is one of the star lots heading under the hammer at Silverstone Auctions’ 2015 NEC Classic Motor Show sale
A rather special 1966 Lotus Elan S2 is heading to Silverstone Auctions’ next sale at the Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show on 14 November. Bought new in 1966 by legendary actor Peter Sellers, the white Elan roadster is estimated to sell for £45,000-£50,000.
Sellers was a well-known serial car buyer, and he took delivery of this Elan when it was brand new. He enjoyed the lightweight roadster’s legendary handling and sprightly character until 1969, when he sold the car onto the second owner. The car passed through a third owner before making its way to the current owner, a private classic car collector, who placed the Elan into dry storage in August 2005.
The Elan has a detailed history file, with MoT certificates stretching back as far as 1977, as well the original V5 registration document, which is signed by Peter Sellers. Offered in original and un-restored condition, the 65,611-mile Elan will be sold with a fresh MoT and in mechanically sound condition, needing only light restoration work to make it cosmetically perfect.
Harry Whale, operations manager and classic car consignor at Silverstone Auctions commented: ‘This truly is a unique Lotus Elan with superb ownership provenance, while it maintains a fantastic level of authenticity. First owned by Peter Sellers, who needs no introduction, this Lotus Elan has sat in a private classic car collection for more than a decade and will now be sold for the first time in many years.’
More than 100 other cars will be offered at the Silverstone Auctions’ 2015 Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show. Take a look at the full listing for the Peter Sellers Elan here, or browse the rest of Silverstone’s consignments here.
