Introduced in 1996, the Lotus Esprit V8 was powered by a bespoke 3.5 litre twin-turbo engine allied to five-speed manual transmission. With a quoted 350bhp and 295lbft of torque on tap, the two-seater was reputedly capable of 0-60mph in 4.7 seconds and 175mph. Offering a typically fine ride / handling balance courtesy of its rack and pinion steering, all independent suspension and four-wheel disc brakes, the model remained in production until 2004 by which time just 1,451 are thought to have been made. Finished in Blue with Cream hide upholstery, 'S550 SEG' is understood to have been in fine order back in 2007 when it suffered cosmetic damage, but was nevertheless classified as a Category D write-off for no other reason than Lotus were at the time unable to supply the parts required, thereby making it temporarily uneconomic to repair. Happily, the Esprit has subsequently been returned to its former glory and is these days regarded by the marque specialist vendor as having 'very good' bodywork, paintwork, interior trim, V8 engine and five-speed manual gearbox. We understand from the seller that the currently indicated mileage of c.52,000 is correct. This lusty Lotus comes complete w

Chassis Number: 366910 Engine Number: LP7843LBA Number of cylinders: 4 A well-known and competitive rally car in the hands of Drew Wylie, this capable Elan competed successfully in the Circuit of Ireland Rally in its more recognisable red livery with silver centre-stripe when built by Gary Dunlop Motorsport. It was discovered by our vendor in a sorrier state than it was during its rallying heydays. As a result a comprehensive rebuild was undertaken to bring it to GTS Rally Spec incorporating many 26R additions along the way. To begin with the Elan body was removed from the chassis to be fully repainted in Orange with Green bumpers, photographs of which are available to see. The shell was then re-crafted to incorporate Elan 26R front and rear wings and 26R headlights whilst the chassis was stripped, strengthened and repainted black. The all steel twin cam engine was masterfully rebuilt by recognised specialist John Smurthwaite of J.S. Motorsport, Warwickshire at a cost in excess of £7,000 - the resulting dyno sheet readings showing that it is producing as much as 167.5bhp. The gearbox was rebuilt and straight cut to close ratio with magnesium casings and tail shaft, the differential
Responding to a demand for more power and torque, Lotus took its super-lightweight Elise, added 200cc to the engine, to turn ‘bristling’ into ‘blistering’ performance. A modest increase in engine capacity to 1.8-litres, its induction supplemented by an Eaton supercharger, means that the power takes an upwards hike to an outstanding 217bhp (220PS). Offering a 0-62mph of just 4.4 secs and onto 145mph top speed whilst still returning a combined fuel economy of 37mpg. Underpinning every Elise S Club Racer is the most efficient, strongest and low weight extruded and bonded chassis-tub. Based on more than 60 years of racing car developments, its torsional rigidity remains outstanding, even with a substantial power increase. It allows the suspension to work most efficiently, to provide unparalleled grip, a comfortable ride and a dynamic balance that is unquestionably excellent. An electronic differential lock (EDL) helps to tame any over-exuberance. However inelegant some safety features can be, Lotus incorporates them within its cars as elements of the design package. The lightweight chassis is protected by safety zones at the front, rear and on both sides. LED supplementary lighting mak
Lotus first applied the Elan name to its small Ron Hickman-designed two-seat Roadster of 1962. It comprised a steel backbone chassis clothed in a lightweight fiberglass body. Power came from a 1,558cc Cosworth twin-cam version of Ford's ubiquitous 'Kent' engine. With independent suspension all round and four wheel disc brakes, the Elan was both light and nimble. It was, however, lacking in space and in June 1967 Lotus introduced another Hickman masterpiece - the Elan +2 Coupe for those that needed more accommodation. Based on a suitably lengthened/widened version of its smaller sibling's chassis, the newcomer enjoyed better aerodynamics and superior grip (thanks to a 0.30 drag co-efficient and six-inch wider track/fatter tyres). And, as the name suggests, it offered two extra seats - in the company's own words, 'The +2 is designed to carry two adults and two children on a long holiday in comfort'. The +2S version was introduced in 1969 and brought such cosmetic improvements as remote boot release and flush fitting interior door handles, plus an improved exhaust system. The very tidy-looking +2S offered is finished in Silver and trimmed in Black. It was evidently the subject of a re
