Bizarre six-wheeled car from ‘The League of Extraordinary Gentleman’ will be offered by Coys
The six-wheeled Nautilus car from the 2003 movie, The League of Extraordinary Gentleman, has come up for auction with Coys. In the movie, starring Sean Connery, the car is driven by Captain Nemo (played by Naseeruddin Shah) and is kept aboard his submarine, which is known as the Nautilus.
Although not entirely practical, the 22-foot long monster is was built on a modified Land Rover fire tender chassis, with a one-off fibreglass shell. The ivory coloured car is highlighted with gold detailing and decoration, which includes a pair of elephants, that are positioned at the front of the car. Along with the elephants, many other designs related to flora and fauna adorn the car adding to its antique-inspired design. The interior is just also unique; trimmed with faux leather, it still features the original Land Rover dials.
Despite its 22-foot length (or 6.7 metres) the Nautilus car doesn’t have room for many passengers, however this shouldn’t be a problem as it’s not actually road legal in the UK. So, it’s really one for diehard collectors or film fans. It actually houses a fully-working Rover V8 engine, six 72 cm wheels hidden behind the wheel arches, and hydraulics to adjust it’s ride height.
The car was designed by Carol Spier and is one of a pair that were made for the movie. The second was filled with camera rigging in order to film the close ups of the actors.
The car is showing some signs of wear and tear after it’s use on the movie set and is a unique piece, valued between £18,000-£25,000. It will be sold by Coys auctions at the Blenheim Palace auction on 11 July. This is perhaps well timed, as the film is due to be rebooted in the near future.
