Jaguar F-type: Buying guide and review (2013-present) Classic and Performance Car

It has taken Jaguar a mere 52 years to release a suitable replacement for the sublime Series 1 E-type. One can almost forgive Jaguar for their recalcitrance because as far as second albums go, it doesn’t get much tougher than this.

The F-type’s predecessor launched in 1961 became a worldwide sensation, with unparalleled looks, serious performance and a price tag undercutting all of its rivals, the E-type stole the show and threatened to never give it back. The ensuing years have only added to the legend with rose tinted memories conveniently glossing over any shortcomings, these gorgeous cars still turn heads as they burble by.

So to the F-type then, the modern world of sports cars is a lot more crowded and competitive than it was in the ‘60s, so while the new Jag has stunning looks and tyre shredding performance it isn’t head and shoulders above the opposition like its predecessor was.

Pricing, too is a fair bit more aggressive so it has to rely on another unique selling point to stand out. And what the F-Type has in spades is real character, a vocal exhaust note and playful chassis make it stand out in a sea of technically brilliant but somewhat clinical competitors.

As a nearly new buy, it can offer real value and old school thrills. Read on to see whether an F-type is what’s missing from your life.

Which Jaguar F-type to buy?

There have been a number of different variants introduced since the 2014 launch, however to begin with first F-Types were released in drop top form only with two supercharged V6s as either a standard 335bhp or 375bhp ‘S’ and a supercharged V8 S with 488bhp. All were initially fitted with the very accomplished ZF eight-speed automatic gearbox, with power went driving the rear wheels. While both V6 S and V8 models come standard with an LSD the one on the smaller engined model is a mechanical unit while the V8 uses an electronic version.

The coupe made its appearance in 2014 and was offered with the same drivetrain options as its convertible stable mates, and with its more rigid structure is the better choice for Nurburgring fans. Due to customer demand, a manual gearbox became available in 2015 for V6 customers and four wheel drive versions of the V6 S and V8 were introduced. The V8 models received a power hike from 488bhp to 545bhp in 2014 providing a 0.3 reduction in 0-60 times.

For the power crazed, the F-Type SVR released in 2016 features a number of performance related updates and a 567bhp version of the supercharged 5.0-litre V8, giving it a 200mph top speed and a 0-60 time of 3.5 seconds. 250 of the very expensive limited edition Project 7 versions were built in 2015, it was the first vehicle out of Jaguar’s Special Vehicles Operation division and featured a number of unique components. Carbon ceramic brakes, uprated suspension, a massive rear wing and unique body shell are some of the more notable changes.

With so many variants there is an F-Type to suit most tastes, however as a second hand buy a convertible V6 S is a lot of car for the money. Thanks to some exhaust and induction trickery it sounds the part too and offers more performance than one could reasonably need, the auto box suits the nature of the convertible too.

Common problems

• With even the first cars being just three years old, there has not been a lot of accumulated data on potential problem areas. A few niggles have been mentioned by current owners and their nature shows just how demanding Jaguar owners can be as well as how right Jaguar has got the F-Type first time around.

• Servicing plans are available when buying new and come in either £995 three-year or £1495 five-year flavours. Everything except wear and tear items are covered and buying upfront can save you about 20% overall. Check if your car has this if buying used.

• Most owners recommend the electric seats with memory function as a worthwhile extra.

• The satnav system has come in for some criticism by owners for being a bit clunky and being difficult to use in direct sunlight.
Boot space is very limited on the convertible and cars specified with spare wheels really do have very little space left for luggage.

• Some cars have had aftermarket remaps, while power gains can be worthwhile be aware that the factory warranty will be rendered void.

Summary and prices

The earliest 2013 and 2014 V6 convertibles range from between £37,000 and £43,000. As price differences are marginal, the extra 40bhp and additional standard equipment of the ‘S’ versions over the standard car make them the preferred choice.

Manuals are extremely rare and most with this option are V6 S Coupes, they generally command a premium of around £5000 over the automatic cars. The V8s start at £48,000 and for this you get a low mileage 2013 convertible, which is an awful lot of car for the money. V8 Coupe models became available in 2014 and begin at £60,000. AWD drivetrains on the V6 S and V8 add some security in wet conditions, and get the V8 models to 60mph a few tenths sooner too. Project 7 cars are already commanding a massive premium over their new price, and if you can find one are around £180,000.

After three years in production, it seems as if the F-Type has managed to pull off the near impossible task of becoming a viable modern replacement for the venerable E-type. Right from the entry-level V6 up to the fire breathing SVR, there isn’t a bad choice in the range. It may not be streets ahead of its competitors in any one field, but it has real character, and as a package that covers all the bases the F-Type is hard to fault.
