Concours Series 2 Jaguar E-type amongst the many classics to sell for considerably more than estimate at Historics’ 29 November sale
With a sell rate of 73 per cent, Historics’ end-of-year sale at Mercedes-Benz World, 81 of the 111 cars were snapped up, racking up total sales of £2.28 million. Many of the cars busted through their top estimate, with most ending up towards their top estimate.
More than 500 bidders attended the sale, and as bidding soared it was obvious that there was a lot of attention over certain cars – especially the Series 2 Jaguar E-type Roadster that sold for £128,800. It was an exceptional example, which has been subject to a concours-standard restoration. Another particularly special E-type, this one a Series 3 V12 Roadster with fewer than 10,000 miles on the clock, sold for £72,000.
The current high demand for Porsche 911 GT3 models was apparent too, when an orange 3.6-litre 997-generation car fetched £79,500. Having previously been involved in an incident that marked the Porsche as a Cat-C write-off, it was painstakingly rebuilt by a specialist, and smashed the £55,000-£65,000 pre-sale estimate.
Perhaps helped by the location, the 17 Mercedes-Benz offerings at the sale performed pretty well, with the 617bhp 2006 McLaren Mercedes SLR finishing up at £159,000. Many of the lower value cars were offered with no reserve, and sold for good money too, like the immaculate 190E, which sold for £2352.
American cars had a good showing at the sale too, with a Shelby GT500 ‘Eleanor’ recreation – based on a genuine 1968 390GT Fastback – selling for £75,000. A much more original 1967 Mustang Convertible ended at £24,640.
Historics’ next auction takes place on 7 March 2015.
