This sleek coupé was based on a shortened saloon floorpan, in this case that of the surprisingly entertaining and almost indestructible E-class. The 300CE drives even better than it looks, and started out with a 188bhp 12-valve engine. This was joined for the 1990 model year by a 24-valve version with 231bhp. You may have to pay a little more than suggested for one of those, especially if it comes with manual transmission. Most of both versions were sold with Mercedes’ tough four-speed auto, but the manual cars are the more coveted now.
