There is one Cortina that is held in almost as much esteem as the Lotus versions, but, fortunately for those who love it, is rather more affordable to buy and less temperamental to look after. The 1600E was launched in late-1967, with its ‘E for Executive’ badging signifying that this Cortina was a big step upmarket. And it was a surprising effective package; an 88bhp 1599cc Kent engine, lowered Lotus suspension, Rostyle wheels, pinstriping, a black grille and a plush interior with a wooden dashboard. It proved a big hit.
