Ex-Roy Salvadori Frazer-Nash Le Mans Replica to be sold

Ex-Roy Salvadori Frazer-Nash Le Mans Replica to be sold Classic and Performance Car

The car from one of the most dramatic racing incidents in motorsport history is up for sale at Goodwood Revival, among many other treasures

The Frazer-Nash Le Mans Replica, which was owned by British racing driver Roy Salvadori, is to be auctioned by Bonhams at Goodwood Revival.
Salvadori debuted his Frazer-Nash Le Mans Replica at the BRDC’s International Trophy Meeting at Silverstone in 1951. But it was an event that would forever haunt him. It was here where the British driver almost ended his career, not to mention his life, after crashing at the Northamptonshire circuit.
‘I was leading, a big thing for me then, ahead of Bob Gerard, Tony Crook and the other Frazer-Nashes. So I was feeling pretty good about life,’ Salvadori told Motorsport magazine in 2008. ‘…we came up to lap a group of slower cars which were having their own battle. I tried to overtake them all, but it couldn’t be done.’ Salvadori slid wide and clipped with a cement-filled oil drum, causing it to roll several times.
‘At Northampton hospital they decided they could do nothing for me, and pushed me into a corner. They rang my parents, but told them I was unlikely to be alive by the time they got there. A priest was summoned and gave me the last rites.’
Miraculously, Salvadori survived, He then went on to race the same car in the same year, finishing first at Castle Combe just months after.
Less dramatic but also on sale at the Bonhams Goodwood Revival auction is the Ferrari 275 GT – of which Steve McQueen was a huge fan. The car will be on sale alongside the stunning 1965 Ferrari 275 GTB/2 Cam Berlinetta, which has been cared for by the same owner for more than 15 years and is estimated at £1,100,000-£1,500,000.
Leading the sale is the fierce Red Dragon Aston Martin Speed Model. The historical racing car has a competition provenance which includes multiple wins at the Italian Mille Miglia, the RAC Tourist Trophy in Ulster, and France’s famed Le Mans 24-Hour race. And course, it has a price tag to match: £1,600,000 – read more about the car here
Bonhams Goodwood Revival Sale takes place in Chichester, West Sussex, on 10 September 2016.
