The Sierra was a brave replacement for the Cortina, and slightly surprising. The aerodynamic body, penned by Patrick Le Quement, clothed conventional engineering - Pinto engines, RWD, and Granada style rear suspension. Sales were slow as buyers baulked at buying a Jellymould, but Ford stuck with the concept. In 1987, it was facelifted and a saloon Sapphire version was added, and success soon followed. It wasn’t long ago that every street was littered by Sierras, but most have now disappeared, so despite modern styling, classic status is assured.
