Why the RS500? Ford chose the name to indicate that only 500 of this 1987 successor to the original RS Cosworth would be built. This evolution of the Cosworth, constructed for motor sport homologation purposes, was put together by Aston Martin subsidiary Tickford. Mechanical modifications put power up to 224bhp. As well as uprated brakes and a modified front end, there was also the zenith of Ford’s spoiler obsession with a second small one now hiding beneath the existing half-mast whale-tail contraption at the rear.
