To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the original Hertz Shelby GT350-H ‘Rent-A-Racer’, the company will once again offer high-performance Ford Mustang rental cars
Ford, in partnership with huge US car rental firm Hertz, has announced that it will produce a special run of 140 Shelby Mustang GT-H models, celebrating 50 years since the first ‘Rent-A-Racer’ program was launched in the USA.
The new model will be based on the standard Shelby Mustang
, but like the original GT-350h, the GT-H will be painted in the Hertz black and gold corporate colour scheme. Today, the original cars are among the most valuable and collectible Mustangs.
Based on the standard Ford Mustang GT
, the GT-H will be fitted with a number of upgrades from the Ford Performance catalogue. This includes the Ford Performance handling pack, sports exhaust and staggered wheel kit. The wheels will also be painted in matt black, with special GT-H centre caps. There are also many small cosmetic tweaks that mark the GT-H out as something special, with a number of GT-H logos and numbered plaques throughout the car.
Like the original ‘Rent-A-Racer’ Mustangs, the new GT-H will only be available to rent through Hertz, starting from Memorial Day weekend (30 May) in the USA. The original idea was to give people the opportunity to experience the high performance of the Mustang, without actually buying a Mustang. For 2016, although the name of the scheme has changed to ‘Hertz Adrenaline Collection’, the ethos is very much the same, making the car’s 435bhp V8 engine and vivid acceleration accessible to anyone renting a car at certain airports in the USA.
‘The 1966 Ford Shelby GT350-H became a legend from the moment it was introduced,’ commented Joe Conway, Co-CEO of Carroll Shelby International and CEO of Shelby American. ‘Ten years ago, the 2006 Ford Shelby GT-H earned the same ‘rock star’ status when it was introduced at the New York Auto Show. We worked closely with Ford Performance to make the 2016 Shelby GT-H the most exciting Mustang ever to wear the iconic Hertz black and gold livery.’
