Another successful sale for Silverstone at the NEC Classic Motor Show sees classic Fords and other 1980s and 1990s classics shine.
Silverstone Auctions has hosted the November Classic Motor Show sale for a few years now, and although it can sometimes be a tough sell, it always throws up a few very interesting results. Sales were very strong this year, with an 80 per cent sell-through rate, making total sales of £4.4m. Perhaps the biggest surprise this year was a 1985 Ford Escort RS Turbo, which sold for a world record £60,188.
While the original Escort RS Turbo has been generally valued at more than £10k for a few years, this ‘as new’ example re-wrote the rulebook. Having covered a mere 5564 miles since it was first registered on 27 February 1985. what this car offered was complete originality – something the right buyer is often willing to pay considerably for.
This wasn’t a one-off fluke for Fords however, as the all of the blue oval entries sold very well. A very nicely restored Capri RS 3100 sold for £48,375, while a Sierra Cosworth RS500 also managed to make £10 above estimate at £90,000. A late 4x4 Sapphire Cosworth also attracted significant interest, finishing at £35,438, while a very clean Mk1 Lotus Cortina ended at 50,625.
The Peter Sellers Lotus Elan was also one of the star cars of the sale, selling for just above top estimate at £50,625. A green Jaguar XJ220, once owned by the Brunei Royal family made a sizable £315,000.
Ferraris were less consistent, as a few failed to sell, while others made solid prices. It was the right hand-drive Ferrari 512 TR that attracted the real attention however, selling for £185,625 – a UK record.
Speaking excitedly immediately after the sale, managing director of Silverstone Auctions, Nick Whale, said: ‘It’s been an absolutely fantastic weekend here at the UK’s biggest classic car show. The atmosphere at the sale was electric and I’m delighted we’ve been able to secure such great prices on behalf of our vendors, as well as breaking a few records along the way. The key sign of a successful auction is when you have both happy sellers and happy buyers and this time we are proud to have achieved both!’
