Replacing and improving on the Strada wasn’t exactly going to be a work of genius given how the opposition had left it far behind, but the Tipo’s excellence was a surprise. The boxy body was galvanised, too, making this the first mid-line Fiat not to rust away in front of it’s owner’s eyes. But its main contribution to car history was that it lent its platform to a bewildering array of Fiat Group products topped by the Alfa Romeo 155 V6. Never won the hearts of buyers in the UK, despite appealing 16V coming on stream in the early ‘90s, and still epitomises the term ‘banger’.
