Specs for the Abarth version of the new Fiat 124 Spider has been confirmed, with UK prices starting from £29,565
The Fiat 124 Spider has gone on sale in the UK, and the company has wasted no time in announcing the final details for the Abarth version, which is set to go on sale in the UK this Summer. The basic price is £29,565 for the six-speed manual, while the ‘Sequenziale Sportivo’ automatic comes in at £31,605.
Although based on the Mazda MX-5’s platform, Fiat has chosen to make use of its own 1.4-litre turbocharged engine in the 124, something Abarth has been more than happy to tune. The turbo four-cylinder boasts 168bhp and 184lb ft of torque from its MultiAir Turbo engine, which is coupled to a six-speed manual, or paddle-shift automatic transmission. Big news is that the Abarth gets a mechanical limited slip differential, while a sporty-sounding Record Monza exhaust comes as standard too.
Abarth’s 124 Spider tips the scales a 1060kg and promises a 6.8sec 0-62mph time, with a top speed of 143mph. The lightweight Mazda MX-5 makes a fine basis for any sports car, and Abarth has left the fairly advanced suspension layout untouched. That means double wishbones up front, and a multi-link rear end – tightened up with meatier anti-roll bars and ‘Abarth by Bilstein’ dampers.
A choice of five bold colours give a retro nod to the 124’s spiritual predecessor, with names like Turini 1975 White and Costa Brava 1972 Red. A matt black ‘anti-glare’ bonnet also harks back to the historic model. A front bumper with larger air intake, rear bumper with built in diffuser as well as a rear spoiler also differentiate it from its less powerful siblings.
