A white Ferrari Testarossa, driven by Sonny Crockett on the 1980s US TV show Miami Vice, is to be offered by Mecum at its Monterey auction
Few TV shows glamorise the 1980s to the same degree as Miami Vice, and one of the white 1986 Ferrari Testarossas used on the show will be heading to auction next month.
While anyone could see the Daytona Spider originally used in the series was a Corvette-based replica, Ferrari was especially annoyed. After suing the original manufacturer of the car, they offered to give the show two brand new black Testarossas, some say by the order of Enzo himself. There was one proviso: That Daytona had to be destroyed on the show…
This is one of those two Ferrari Testarossas
, re-painted white by the producers of the show. It currently shows just 16,124 miles on the clock, which has also been certified by Ferrari North America and Classiche back in Maranello. Although the car has been in storage since 1989, it has just had an engine-out service recommissioning service at a cost of $8000, and is ready to go.
Testarossas are currently going through a resurgence in the classic Ferrari market, with prices for nice original cars increasing on a daily basis. Mecum hasn’t given this particularly special Testarossa an estimate, but the fact it was recently advertised on eBay for $1.75m should give an indicator. Head to Monterey on 15 August to put in a bid for yourself…Images: William Stern, Courtesy of Mecum Auctions
