Released in 2004, the F430 was the latest in a line of mid-engined V8 ‘entry level’ Ferraris, taking over the mantle from the 360. It featured Enzo-inspired sharp-edged styling, and was considered by most to be an improvement on the 360’s somewhat rounded lines.

The engine was an all-new unit with size upped to 4.3-litres, and a commensurate increase in power and torque. With 483bhp trumping the 360’s 400bhp and a wider power band, performance was much improved. A new E-Diff ensured that all that power was more equally distributed between the rear wheels, and an updated F1 transmission cut shift times significantly. The 430 was also the first to receive the now ubiquitous manettino switch, which allowed drivers to select from a variety of pre-programmed suspension, throttle and electronic differential settings.

All this technology made for a class-leading vehicle in 2004, and the Ferrari F430 is still a rapid and desirable junior supercar today, with few new cars able to offer a similar level of speed and style for the money.

Which one to buy?

The F430 was initially made launched as a Berlinetta, with the Spider following a year later. This was the last mid-engined V8 Ferrari offered with a manual gearbox, and not many were specified with this option at that. Their rarity does mean that they carry a premium over the F1 paddle shift examples. Carbon Ceramic brake discs were optional until 2007 when they became standard fitment. The standard discs are fine for road use (and some say they provide better feel) however the ceramics are recommended if regular track days are going to be on the agenda.

The 430 Scuderia is a lightened and more powerful version that made an appearance in 2007. This was followed by the Scuderia Spider 16M in 2008, which was released to celebrate Ferrari’s 16th World constructors championship in Formula 1. With only 499 16Ms produced, it’s very difficult to find one for sale today.

The paddle shift gearbox is much improved over earlier attempts, and received some upgrades during production to improve shift times and smooth changes at lower speeds. Clutches do wear out quicker than the manual counterparts while driving in heavy traffic can further increase wear. Compared to the latest transmissions, the F430’s system can feel a bit outdated but it is still a pleasant system to use.

Colour and trim specs were not limited to the traditionally red/cream or red/black combos of the ‘80s so you have a far wider choice of trim. The Scuderia examples featured distinctive twin lines running the length of the car, as well as modified bumpers.

A number of track-only cars were produced, called the F430 Challenge, and racing versions such as the F430 GTC and F430 GT3 campaigned successfully in a number of championships around the world.

Common problems

• The F430 is a generally reliable car with no real problem areas. Servicing costs can be cut significantly by using a reputable specialist rather than Ferrari main dealers.

• Clutches on the F1 gearbox cars do not last long with some examples needing replacement every 15,000 miles or even sooner.  Manual cars are a bit easier on their clutches but heavy actuation and a high catching point will indicate a replacement is due soon. Flywheels require replacing every second clutch change.

• Camchains replaced cambelts in the 430, so the dreaded three-yearly engine removal of older mid-engined Ferraris does not affect this car.

• Exhaust manifolds can crack, which is a relatively common problem. Some specialists can weld-repair them, saving you the exorbitant cost of buying a new one.

• The suspension bushes wear out relatively quickly leading to the complete wishbone assembly requiring replacement. Once again, specialists can re-bush the existing items at a reduced cost.

• Carbon Ceramic brakes were an option from the beginning and became standard from 2007 onwards. The discs are meant to last the life of the car, but the pads are very pricey to replace. Standard discs and pads on the earlier models are well up to the task of retarding the car and are cheaper to replace, however over the life of the car the extra expense of the steel disc replacement can reduce the overall savings.

• Rust is not an issue yet, however it is worth checking over the bodywork for signs of accident damage. Rear light brackets can break causing the lights to move around in their mountings. A replacement unit will be required if this is the case.

• Some owners have complained of fragile wheel rims, which buckle easily if driven over potholes so it is worth checking if there are any cracks inside the rim face.

Summary and prices

Higher mileages are more common than with other Ferraris, as their reliability and ease of use meant that many owners used them as regular transport as well as a weekend toy. Early F430s start at around £70,000 with a premium paid for the Spider and manual examples.

Scuderia’s range between £130,000 and £180,000, with the 16M Spiders closer to £300,000. As these cars are more collectible, low mileages and few owners significantly affect the asking price.

The Ferrari F430 is a great supercar car whatever specification you choose, it still delivers great performance and an engaging drive today. With reasonable running costs and a decent amount of choice available, you can find the perfect car to suit your needs.

The performance is simply breaktaking, with acceleration from zero to 60 mph in less than four seconds and a maximum speed in excess of 195 mph. Ferrari’s F1 gearbox, as fitted to this example, was upgraded in the F430 with cutting-edge software to allow gear changes taking just 150 milliseconds per shift. Contemporary road tests by the motoring media remarked that the drop-top lost nothing to the closed car in terms of performance, so it is arguably the more desirable model. The F430 came with adjustable suspension as standard, which - along with the electronic differential and transmission settings - is controlled by the steering wheel-mounted Manettino switch. This F430 Spider is presented in the unusual and striking combination of Nero Daytona with sumptuous, Crema hide seats that have the highly desirable Daytona inserts in Black. The stunning bright red plenum chambers are showcased through the glass window on top of the engine bay. Scuderia Ferrari wing shields, yellow brake callipers and 20” Monolithic alloy rims complete the exterior look of this F430 Spider. Cabin equipment includes climate control, electric windows and door mirrors, Ferrari stereo, yellow rev counter and push-button start. The original factory tool kit, complete book pouch accompany this Ferrari F430 Spider. The service book contains 9 main dealer stamps and will leave Foskers with a fresh annual service. The F430 Scuderia was unveiled by Michael Schumacher at the Frankfurt Motor show in July 2007 and was the most potent road-legal version of the 430 produced by the factory. A gap had been left since the 360 Challenge Stradale production ended in 2005, and this model filled the void by being lighter, more powerful, rawer and technologically more advanced than its standard sibling.

Thanks to a high compression motor with re-mapped engine management and a sports exhaust, output was increased from 483 to 510bhp, this being developed at an unchanged 8500rpm. This increase in performance gave the Scuderia a 0-60 mph time of just 3.7 seconds and on to a top speed of 197 mph. The F1 transmission also came in for some attention, Scuderia's used Ferrari's latest generation 'Superfast' software that reduced gearchange time to just 60 milliseconds. Other important developments were made including a new traction control system that combined the E-Diff electronic differential and the F1-Trac traction and stability control in a single integrated system; E-Diff-2. Ride-height was dropped by 15mm, firmer springs and dampers were installed along with bigger carbon ceramic brake discs. The front ca

  • FERRARI F430 SPIDER 2007

    £115,000 £115,000

Manufactured from 2004 until 2009, the Ferrari F430 was the successor to the enormously successful 360M. According to its creators, the F430 was at least 70 % new compared with the 360. It had a new engine, a new F1 gearbox, a new diff and a brand-new chassis, and although the styling is obviously reminiscent of the 360M's, in reality, it's pretty much a ground-up design. Only the bonnet, doors, and roof were carried over; the rest, even the door mirrors, were all new and largely the work of Pininfarina, overseen by Ferrari's design chief Frank Stephenson. The F430's complex variable-valve-timing system is also lifted straight from the Enzo's V12, and as ever there is dry-sump lubrication, a very high compression ratio (11.3:1), a variable airflow plenum chamber. and an enormous electronic brain making the decisions in the form of not one, but two, Bosch Motronic ME7 ECUs. At 483bhp it has a significant 21 % more power than the 360. Its fabulous 4.3-litre V8 will rocket this very sleek new Ferrarifrom 0-62mph in just 3.9 seconds and on to a maximum speed in excess of 196mph.We are pleased to offer here this UK-supplied, right-hand drive Ferrari F430 F1 Spider whith single only 3 previous owners. This exquisite car was delivered through Stratstone Car Sales, Manchester on 4th May 2007 and was ordered in Rosso Scuderia with Crema seats and Rosso stitching. Then back to gray Paul for the remainder on 13th April 2011 - 9266 miles on 24th April 2012 - 11015 miles, on the 2nd May 2124 at 13,239, on the 29th April 2016 – 14,885, and finally on the 30th January 2017 – 15659.
