Ferrari F430: Buying guide and review (2004-2009) Classic and Performance Car

Released in 2004, the F430 was the latest in a line of mid-engined V8 ‘entry level’ Ferraris, taking over the mantle from the 360. It featured Enzo-inspired sharp-edged styling, and was considered by most to be an improvement on the 360’s somewhat rounded lines.

The engine was an all-new unit with size upped to 4.3-litres, and a commensurate increase in power and torque. With 483bhp trumping the 360’s 400bhp and a wider power band, performance was much improved. A new E-Diff ensured that all that power was more equally distributed between the rear wheels, and an updated F1 transmission cut shift times significantly. The 430 was also the first to receive the now ubiquitous manettino switch, which allowed drivers to select from a variety of pre-programmed suspension, throttle and electronic differential settings.

All this technology made for a class-leading vehicle in 2004, and the Ferrari F430 is still a rapid and desirable junior supercar today, with few new cars able to offer a similar level of speed and style for the money.

Which one to buy?

The F430 was initially made launched as a Berlinetta, with the Spider following a year later. This was the last mid-engined V8 Ferrari offered with a manual gearbox, and not many were specified with this option at that. Their rarity does mean that they carry a premium over the F1 paddle shift examples. Carbon Ceramic brake discs were optional until 2007 when they became standard fitment. The standard discs are fine for road use (and some say they provide better feel) however the ceramics are recommended if regular track days are going to be on the agenda.

The 430 Scuderia is a lightened and more powerful version that made an appearance in 2007. This was followed by the Scuderia Spider 16M in 2008, which was released to celebrate Ferrari’s 16th World constructors championship in Formula 1. With only 499 16Ms produced, it’s very difficult to find one for sale today.

The paddle shift gearbox is much improved over earlier attempts, and received some upgrades during production to improve shift times and smooth changes at lower speeds. Clutches do wear out quicker than the manual counterparts while driving in heavy traffic can further increase wear. Compared to the latest transmissions, the F430’s system can feel a bit outdated but it is still a pleasant system to use.

Colour and trim specs were not limited to the traditionally red/cream or red/black combos of the ‘80s so you have a far wider choice of trim. The Scuderia examples featured distinctive twin lines running the length of the car, as well as modified bumpers.

A number of track-only cars were produced, called the F430 Challenge, and racing versions such as the F430 GTC and F430 GT3 campaigned successfully in a number of championships around the world.

Common problems

• The F430 is a generally reliable car with no real problem areas. Servicing costs can be cut significantly by using a reputable specialist rather than Ferrari main dealers.

• Clutches on the F1 gearbox cars do not last long with some examples needing replacement every 15,000 miles or even sooner.  Manual cars are a bit easier on their clutches but heavy actuation and a high catching point will indicate a replacement is due soon. Flywheels require replacing every second clutch change.

• Camchains replaced cambelts in the 430, so the dreaded three-yearly engine removal of older mid-engined Ferraris does not affect this car.

• Exhaust manifolds can crack, which is a relatively common problem. Some specialists can weld-repair them, saving you the exorbitant cost of buying a new one.

• The suspension bushes wear out relatively quickly leading to the complete wishbone assembly requiring replacement. Once again, specialists can re-bush the existing items at a reduced cost.

• Carbon Ceramic brakes were an option from the beginning and became standard from 2007 onwards. The discs are meant to last the life of the car, but the pads are very pricey to replace. Standard discs and pads on the earlier models are well up to the task of retarding the car and are cheaper to replace, however over the life of the car the extra expense of the steel disc replacement can reduce the overall savings.

• Rust is not an issue yet, however it is worth checking over the bodywork for signs of accident damage. Rear light brackets can break causing the lights to move around in their mountings. A replacement unit will be required if this is the case.

• Some owners have complained of fragile wheel rims, which buckle easily if driven over potholes so it is worth checking if there are any cracks inside the rim face.

Summary and prices

Higher mileages are more common than with other Ferraris, as their reliability and ease of use meant that many owners used them as regular transport as well as a weekend toy. Early F430s start at around £70,000 with a premium paid for the Spider and manual examples.

Scuderia’s range between £130,000 and £180,000, with the 16M Spiders closer to £300,000. As these cars are more collectible, low mileages and few owners significantly affect the asking price.

The Ferrari F430 is a great supercar car whatever specification you choose, it still delivers great performance and an engaging drive today. With reasonable running costs and a decent amount of choice available, you can find the perfect car to suit your needs.

The F430 is sensational. It isn?t as fast in a straight line as some of its competitors, but the blend of drivability, excitement, immediacy, and purity is unmatched. It sings to you and embodies everything we love about Italian cars. The car has a 4.3 litre naturally aspirated V8, still in use in modified and direct-injected form in the current 458 Italia. It's the totality, the greatness of the entire package that mesmerizes here. The Pininfarina-styled aluminum bodywork looks stunning from every angle, the aluminum space-frame chassis forms a rigid base for the suspension to operate with utmost precision, and the 4.3-litre 490hp V-8 revs to a rarefied 8500 rpm. The angry cry of stressed metal and most high-strung exhaust note this side of Formula 1 leave an indelible impression. Weight is 3,200 pounds, but big tyres and some very advanced computer software (including the stuff it took to run a lightning-fast-for-its-day 60ms paddle-shift transmission) meant 0-60 took a mere 3.8 seconds. Every review of the car glowed with praise. Handling was supposedly fantastic. This was the first car that started the now-cliche trope that the electronics actually helped the driving experience

    £104,995 £104,995

This was the first car that started the now-cliche trope that the electronics actually helped the driving experience rather than detracted from it. Some called it the best car in the world, ever, and would ever be, a divine presence, a distillation of all of man's achievements into a single machine. The F430 Spider's shape is the result of lengthy testing and features a pronounced rear lip spoiler which is integrated into the end of the engine cover, new bigger rear air intakes that emphasise the car's muscular stance, and a new rear valance that incorporates a diffuser of competition derivation. Ferrari's soft-top includes a number of important technical features which give hints of the car's F1 pedigree, starting with the innovative electronic differential (E-diff), steering wheel-mounted rotary switch, known to the Scuderias drivers as the 'manettino', which allows the car's traction set-up to be adjusted easily and quickly. This low mileage, UK example comes in Rosso Corsa with Crema leather/red carpets upholstery. Long list of extras include electrically adjustable and heated 'Daytona' style seats, upgraded sound system with subwoofer and Becker CD player with satellite naviga

    POA POA

Ferrari has always had racing at the heart of its purpose and being as a manufacturer. The road cars were simply sold to fund the racing cars in Scuderia Ferrari’s efforts in capturing F1 championships as well as other championships across the motorsports world. Since 1948 Ferrari has always seemed to build a racecar, then a road car variant for mass production. All the way up through 1969 Ferrari tended to build what they thought the public liked, mostly GT cars of different variants with only mid-engine cars dedicated to the track. When Fiat became a major influence with ownership interest in 1969, a more cohesive plan became evident as a more defined model line up began to evolve. The Dino, in many ways, was genesis for what was to become the platform for a sales evolution for Ferrari. On to the 308, then 328 and production numbers were soaring. It was the culmination of racing, road cars, and customer interest that became the fundamentals and recipe for the Ferrari Challenge Series. A brilliant marketing effort but also a research and development effort to continually improve upon the platforms for the mid-engine flagships that began to define the company’s financial status and
