Led Zeppelin manager’s Ferrari Dino heads under the hammer

A 1973 Dino 246 GTS bought new by Led Zeppelin manager Peter Grant will be offered for sale by Coys.


Peter Grant managed the most successful rock and roll band of the 1970s and now, and the Dino 246 GTS he bought new is going under the hammer.
 
The 1973 Dino, which was paid for thanks to proceeds from managing Whole Lotta Love creators Led Zeppelin, is to be sold by Coys on 8 September. To mark the car’s provenance, Coys drove the car to the band’s own label’s headquarters – Swan Song Records. 
 
The car was bought new in 1973 – at the height of Zeppelin’s fame – for more than £6000. Its purchase marks Grant’s success as one of the toughest, hardest and most revolutionary managers of his era: vastly improving Zeppelin’s fortune by cutting unprecedented deals with record companies and tour agencies. There is even a music business management course named after him.
 
This culturally-significant very special right hand drive Ferrari Dino 246 GTS was listed in 1973 at £6620.39, including delivery charges, number plates and road tax. Grant also opted for the non-standard non-metallic paint at £63.16 and leather upholstery at £210.93. 
 
Grant sold the car in 1976, and today the car is estimated at £350,000-£400,000.
 
The Dino will be auctioned at Coys’ Thoroughbreds and Vintage at Fontwell auction, in the elegant gardens of Fontwell House in the Sussex Downs, only a few miles from Goodwood.
 
Chris Routledge, CEO of Coys, said: ‘Swan Song Records was Led Zeppelin’s own record label, overseen by Peter Grant and used by the band to promote its own products as well as sign new upcoming artists. It’s not hard to imagine Peter Grant driving the Dino around Chelsea and parking it outside the studio back in the day, before meeting with the band.’
 
He said: ‘The GTS has all the intrinsic qualities of the Dino 246, but offers in addition the extraordinary sensation of hearing the machinery come to life all around one. That is why it is not just a car with a sporting appearance; it is an authentic sports car through and through and, combined with its wonderful provenance and history would certainly grace any collection.’
 
Sixty other classic and sports cars will also be going under the hammer at the auction, including a 2010 Lamborghini Reventon Roadster estimated at £900,000-£1,000,000, a 1975 Iso Lele Sport estimated at £58,000-£65,000 and a 1954 Aston Martin DB 2/4 Mark 1 estimated at £160,000-£190,000.
