Ferrari 550 World Speed Record edition headed to auction

Ferrari 550 World Speed Record edition headed to auction Classic and Performance Car

Rare special edition Ferrari 550 Maranello expected to sell for £180,000-£220,000 at Silverstone Auctions’ Race Retro auction

Silverstone Auctions has consigned a limited edition Ferrari 550 Maranello WSR to its Race Retro auction on 25-26 February, with an estimate of £180,000-£220,000.
Built to celebrate the model’s world speed records set in 1998, Ferrari produced 33 WSR editions – ten of which in right-hand drive – to match the spec of the record-setting car. This is one of those RHD cars.
Never heard of the record attempt? Due to the success of the 550 in the world of international motorsport, the company tweaked a standard road car, and sent it to a 12km test track in Columbus, Ohio in the USA. The car went on to set three world speed records: driving 100 miles at an average speed of 190.2mph, driving for one hour at an average speed of 184mph and also covering 100 kilometres at 188.9mph.

The specification of the WSR road cars mirrored that of the record breaker, with a leather-covered roll bar, lightweight racing seats and harnesses, Alcantara steering wheel as well as the Fiorano handling package and of course the six-speed manual transmission. There’s also a special plaque.
As with all UK right-hand drive cars, this example was sold new through Maranello Concessionaires, and is today offered from the collection of its second owner. It has covered just 33,800 miles, and will be sent to Terry Keys at Silverstone ahead of the auction, being given a full service and MoT.
Will Smith, sales manager for Silverstone Auctions commented: ‘We are delighted to offer this exceptionally rare, right-hand drive 'WSR' at public auction for the first time in its life. A beautiful 550 Maranello such as this opens the door into a very exclusive club, and a rare special edition like this represents an exciting opportunity for any collector. We expect it to make £180,000 to £220,000 at auction.’
