Top 10 auction prices: May 2015

Here’s our round up of the top ten auction prices from May 2015

May has certainly been a busy, and successful month for RM Sotheby’s, with eight of the top sellers coming from the auction house’s Fort Worth and Villa Erba sales. Bonhams took the other two spots with the UK's Newport Pagnell, Aston Martin Works sale. Here are the ten most expensive cars sold in May 2015:

1962 Ferrari 400 Superamerica SWB Cabriolet by Pininfarina

1962 Ferrari 400 Superamerica SWB Cabriolet by Pininfarina
Sold for £5,050,000 ($7,645,000) at RM Sotheby’s, Fort Worth, USA. 2 May

The most expensive car sold at auction in May was this beautiful Ferrari 400 Superamerica cabriolet, which has a particularly interesting history. The 1962 Geneva and New York motor show car, while in private ownership, was driven flat-out on the Bonneville salt flats to a top speed of 145mph. More recently it has been the subject of a money-no-object restoration by Ferrari specialists in California, after which it became the highlight of the Andrews collection. It was sold alongside the rest of the collection – many of which appears in this list.

This absolutely beautiful example of one of the earliest competitive Ferrari models was sold at the Italian Villa Erba sale. It was actually the last ever Touring-bodied 212 Export model, and due to its eligibility in many of the great historic events like the Mille Miglia and Le Mans Classic, it’s a hugely desirable piece of history.
