Gooding & Company has celebrated record sales at Amelia Island, with a 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider selling for $17,160,000.
Gooding & Company has always done well at its Amelia Island auction, but thanks to an outstanding selection of cars this year, it managed total sales of $60,162,150 in a single day of sales. If you like statistics, 69 of the 79 cars offered on 11 March were sold, meaning a sale rate of 87 per cent and an average sale price of $871,915. All but one of the Jerry Seinfeld Porsches managed to find a new home,
but it was the 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider that exceeded expectations, ending at $17,160,000, slightly above its top estimate.
This particularly beautiful California didn’t quite manage to beat to beat the record price paid for the Baillon ‘barn find’ California that Artcurial sold in 2015 for $18,465,500 (€16,288,000)
, but it did set a record for a single lot sold at Amelia Island, as well as for Gooding & Company.
Although you couldn’t exactly claim that any California Spider is undesirable, but ‘2871 GT’ is possibly one of the most desirable specifications, with closed headlights, and is in largely original condition, not being fully restored at ay point.
‘We are delighted with our auction results and are proud of the new auction records we have set, which demonstrates that there is a strong demand for high quality cars,’ stated David Gooding, President of Gooding & Company. ‘The room was electric from the beginning and the crowd's intensity only grew when Mr. Seinfeld joined Charlie and me on stage to present his stunning offerings.’ Gooding & Company’s top ten 2016 Amelia Island sales
