Here the mega-money art market meets the car market with one of the most saleable artists ever. In 1979 Andy Warhol became the fourth artist to be commissioned to create a BMW Art Car, but the first to work directly on the car, the others having created their designs on 1:5 scale models.
The work reportedly took just 23 minutes to complete, with Warhol adding ‘a more personal touch’ by running his fingers through the wet paint. The car raced just once, in 1979’s Le Mans, finishing sixth overall.
Now, of course, Warhol’s art is highly sought after: in May 2007 his 1963 painting Green Car Crash (Green Burning Car I) sold for million and Lemon Marilyn went for million.
