Beatles memorabilia never fails to attract high prices. John Lennon bought this Phantom V new, had the rear seat modified to convert to a double bed, and had a sound system (complete with loudhailer) fitted. He then had it painted by a Dutch gypsy artist known as The Fool.
In 1970, Lennon and Yoko Ono had the car shipped to New York but in 1977 they arranged to ‘donate’ the car to the Cooper-Hewitt Museum in New York in return for a 5,000 tax credit. It was sold in 1985 for a world auction price record of ,299,000 to business mogul Jim Pattison, who later gifted the car to the province of British Columbia. It’s still at the Royal British Columbia Museum.
