It would be hard to argue with not one but two of the most famous motor sport victories of all time: GT40 chassis number 1075 won both the 1968 and ’69 Le Mans. Under the team leadership of John Wyer, who had left under a cloud from Ford’s racing programme, in 1968 1075 gradually reeled in the less reliable Porsches to take a highly popular victory, while in ’69 it again beat a Porsche in a famously close last lap.
Away from Le Mans, 1075 clocked up a string of non-finishes, along with firsts at Sebring, Spa and Watkins Glen, and a third at the Nürburgring. Compared with Le Mans cars of the 1950s, GT40s could be said to be undervalued, but 1075 is the car that would buck that trend, thanks to its provenance, originality and evocative Gulf livery. Currently, though, it’s happily ensconced with a private collector in the USA.
