Bonhams will auction one of four surviving Murphy-bodied 1930 Cord L-29 Town Cars at its Amelia Island sale.
After recently being uncovered in the Pacific Northwest of America, in original unrestored condition, Bonhams will offer a 1930 Cord L-29 Town Car with coachwork by Murphy & Company at its Amelia Island sale on 12 March.
From the estate of Jay Hide, the rare Cord was originally owned by movie star Dolores del Rio. Hide owned the Cord since 1959 up until he died in 2014, and he looked after the car very carefully – only being seen in public a hand full of times.
One of its last appearances was at the 1987 Pebble Beach Concours, where it appeared in the custom bodied Cord class. The short-wheelbase L29 has some nice proportions, and with an in-line eight-cylinder producing 125bhp it should be quite quick relatively speaking.
Where the special body comes into its own is where the intricate and beautiful detail, only found on luxury hand-built cars of this era. Finding cars of this era in such original condition is increasingly difficult,
Offered alongside many other classics, the Cord will go under the hammer on 12 March 2015.
