Citroën brought its big car hydropneumatic technology to the small car market with 1970’s GS. Looking like a scaled-down blend of DS and SM, motive power for this futuristic family saloon was, at first, a 1015cc air-cooled flat-four engine. The interior looked like it had borrowed its controls from a spaceship and, naturally, there was self-levelling suspension throughout. The car became a hatchback as the GSA in 1979, but far more intriguing was the GS Birotor of 1973, which showcased Citroën’s Wankel rotary engine leanings.
