Low weight and a firecracker of an engine made the humble Citroen BX 16v one of the surprise performance bargains of the 1980s
The BX 16v was perhaps one of the performance car surprises of the ‘80s, given the base car’s utter lack of go-faster pretension. But when they slotted in an all-aluminium engine pumping out 160bhp (shared with the much more revered Peugeot 405 Mi16), beefed up the suspension and tacked-on a bodykit, a sporting express was created. With a top speed of 135mph and a 0-60mph time comfortably under 8 seconds, the BX could trade punches with far more expensive cars, but despite being relatively good value, sales were disappointing after an initial flurry. Most have gone now, having fallen prey to the 205 GTI engine-swap brigade.
