The Citroen AX GT proves that great things really do come in small packages
The lightweight AX was transformed into a latter-day Mini-Cooper when given the sporting treatment. 'Rocky Marciano' was how the advertisers described it, and they had a point: it was a featherweight that packed a giant-killing punch. Despite being powered by a carb-fed 1.4-litre packing a mere 85bhp, the GT could sprint to 60mph in 8.4 seconds, and stay with the hot hatch grandees on the twisty stuff. Flimsy interior was a bit of a turn-off for some, but a constant source of delight for others. Now gaining a bit of a following after years in the doldrums.
