1953-1955 CHEVROLET Corvette C1 specifications

Conceived as an image-builder, the Corvette was built in glassfibre because that was the quickest and cheapest way to get it into production. Only 300 were completed in 1953, all hand-built; these now command almost double the prices quoted here for ‘54/55 ‘Vettes. Most of this first series of Corvettes used a 3.8-litre straight-six and all but seven of the paltry 700 built in 1955 used a new 4.3-litre V8. The low numbers were because GM still had plenty of ‘54 Corvettes left to sell and nearly pulled the plug. Now, of course, these models are very collectible.
