When the 968 was launched back in 1991 Porsche was in trouble. The world economy was imploding, the 911 of the period – the 964 – was barely profitable and not exactly flying out of the showrooms, while its only other product, the pensionable 928, had been propping up the range since the mid-’70s. The 968 became pivotal to Porsche’s future and, despite being little more than a revised 944 S2 and selling only 12,776 examples in its four-year lifespan, it helped to turn everything around in Zuffenhausen.
Sales got off to a sluggish start for the original coupé, but sparked with the significantly cheaper, stripped-out and lowered Club Sport version, and peaked with the more extensively specified Sport.
The 968 has resisted the ravages of time, and right now its depreciation has hit rock bottom. The increasing rarity and growing classic status are beginning to edge prices back up; there are still decent cars available for under £10,000 at the moment, but the best are heading for £15,000.
