To be OFFERED AT AUCTION WITHOUT RESERVE at Auction Americas Auburn Fall event, September 2-6, 2015. Chassis No. WBY2Z2C54EVX64167 Estimate:$160,000 - $180,000 For all of its unexpected characteristics, its startling yet elegant shape, its retention of the genetic elements that made BMWs ultimate driving machines, with optimism and enthusiasm, we declare the BMW i8 Automobile Magazine's 2014 Design of the Year.
The story of the BMW i8 begins in 2008 with the launch of Project i. The end goal of this project was the reinvention of urban mobility. Just over a year later the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics concept previewed what technological advances toward energy saving would look like, in near production ready form. The strategy of EfficientDynamics is to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions while increasing the driving quality and dynamics. The BMW i8 would set a new standard for how the sports cars of the future will look and perform. This hybrid sports car matched with a petrol engine mends the tattered seams between current styling, breath taking performance and overall efficiency.
The long wheel base gives the car a crouching stance as it drives down the road. A low and wide front end seems to hover just above the ground. The sides have a wedge shape with long defined lines that enhance the sporty look. All of the lines conjoin in the rear harmoniously; aerodynamically efficient and extremely sporty. One character that makes the i8 immediately recognizable are the scissor doors. The doors swing upwards, and while open, compliment the smooth lines of the body. The doors are made from aluminum, carbon and thermoplastics which makes them 50-percent lighter than normal doors which allows for ease of closing.
Inside, the interior continues the sporty look with Carum Spice Grey leather upholstery and carbon elements on the doors. The seating is set low, and provides comfort when driving in a straight line or around a corner. Some of the materials that were used in the interior were made from recycled plastic bottles continuing the sustainability concept. The digital instrument panel has two displays and is easy to read and operate. The center console contours the driver and conveniently features the shifter and the iDrive controller.
The exterior on this i8 has been painted in Crystal White with BMW i Blue, which was a $1,800 option. This BMW is also equipped with the $10,800 Pure Impulse World option that includes: 20-inch BMW i Light Alloy wheels T, anti-theft alarm system, storage package, heated front seats, headliner in Anthracite, BMW i Blue seat belt, park distance control, ambiance lighting, LED headlights with cornering lights, active driving assistance, head-up display, Harman/Kardon premium sound, enhanced B/T and smartphone integration. The vehicle is equipped with WiFi which allows for text messages and emails to be displayed on the head-up unit. Also displayed on the head-up unit is vehicle speed, speed limit information, and navigation instructions in color.
Powering this German masterpiece is eDrive technology and a petrol engine. The eDrive has a 129-hp and 184-lb-ft of torque, which is available simultaneously. An advanced cooling system keeps the batteries at the correct operating temperature, extending the life of the batteries and increasing performance. The stupendously efficient petrol engine is a turbo powered 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine making 228-hp and 236-lb-ft of torque. Overall horsepower is 357, which pushes the carto 60-mph in 3.5-seconds. The all-wheel drive system is made of a two-speed front automatic transmission and a six-speed rear automatic transmission.
The BMW i8 was only given to certain dealerships that had higher sales revenues. Some BMW dealerships have tried to buy i8s from these other dealerships, just to have one of these spectacular cars. Each dealership that was chosen by BMW is entitled to 2 i8s per year, creating a high demand for this sports car. The current owner said that there was a waiting list of 10 buyers after he purchased this car, which was the first one in Western Pennsylvania. The odometer shows 1,342 miles which the owner has put on the car from new by traveling to and from car shows.
This is a rare opportunity to own the first production car in the world to be made of carbon fiber; and the first ever plug-in hybrid BMW i8. No commercial charging stations are required for this car, it can be plugged into any household electrical outlet.
