The arrival of the C2 generation Audi 100 caught BMW napping. Suddenly, its beautifully engineered car looked old-hat thanks to their upright styling. The 1987 5-Series certainly put that right, not only modernising the mid-line saloons, but creating a look that would remain with BMW until into the 21st century. The same wide range of engines were used as before, although VANOS and 24-valve heads became standard fare for the sixes. Balanced, poised, and the benchmark when new, curiously underrated and overlooked now. Their time will come.
