Bentley S2

car description

Up until 1957 Bentley had only offered two door Continental style bodies, so to meet the demand of requests from their customers for a more practical four door variant with greater luggage capacity the Flying Spur was born. H.J. Mulliner’s chief designer George Moseley was entrusted with styling the new four door motor car and his design was so well received that it lasted the entire production of Continental S Type Bentleys until 1966, also becoming one of the coachbuilt options available on the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III chassis. The initial concept of six light coachwork was adapted, again at the request of some of Bentleys best customers, with a four light version offered and built in very limited numbers. Just eighteen four light examples are believed to have been produced in both right and left hand drive across the entire production of the Continental Flying Spur (1957 to 1966) Chassis No BC28CH which we are currently offering for sale is believed to be one of only five or six examples bodied in this style on the S1 Continental chassis in right hand drive. It separates itself from its six light cousins with a smaller rear quarter light glass and wider C post, giving the car an arguably more attractive side profile, and offering slightly more privacy for the passengers seated in the rear of the car. It also benefits from all of the later mechanical improvements added to the S1 Continental, all of which were factory fitted from new, those being power steering, the dual braking system and the later 8:1 carburettors. Chassis No BC28CH was delivered new in May in 1958 to Mr E Marsh and has subsequently resided in a private collection for the past twenty five years. During this time BC28CH was sparingly used whilst being maintained regardless of cost. A large number of invoices are present in the history file documenting the maintenance records during this time. Since our acquisition we have improved the car further, repainting it in midnight blue and carrying out some restoration to the chrome fittings. The interior has been restored and new dark blue Wilton carpets have been fitted in our trimming shop. BC28CH is arguably one of the most desirable four door Bentleys ever produced, is now in excellent condition and is one we are very pleased to offer for sale.
