Bentley Brooklands: Buying guide and review (2008-2011)

Bentley Brooklands Bentley Brooklands Bentley Brooklands Bentley Brooklands Bentley Brooklands Bentley Brooklands Bentley Brooklands
At its launch in 2008, the Brooklands was the fastest Bentley ever produced. Its 530bhp was – and still is – very impressive, but it was the monumental 774lb ft of torque and 4600rpm redline that gave this car its character. The legendary 6.75-litre V8 – with twin turbo chargers – required a reinforced six-speed gearbox from ZF to get the power to the rear wheels.

No high revving, frantic gear changing antics were required to demolish the road ahead. German competitors may have had yet more power and a faster 0-60mph time, but the Brooklands transcended such crass comparisons and batted away dissenters with a mighty wave of torque and near instant in-gear acceleration.

Handling was also judged by a different yardstick. Something weighing two and a half tons is never going to slice down a road like a Ferrari, but that is not what this car was about. Having said that, the Brooklands manages its weight very well, and can be hustled through corners with some serious speed. In any case, comfort and luxury can be appreciated all of the time, unlike razor sharp handling, which requires a time and a place to enjoy.

Which one to buy?

Based on the convertible Azure, the Brooklands was available solely as a four-seater pillarless Coupe. It was hand assembled and the interior trim exhibited the kind of craftsmanship that is expected of this brand. New owners were offered a range of personalisations that could fill a book, and the base price was just an indication of where things were headed.

Carbon ceramic brakes were a £20,000 option, and with 27 colours of leather and a myriad of paint and wood trim finishes, many an oligarch could be kept busy for weeks on end. Inside there was not much of an attempt made at cramming the dashboard full of the latest electronic fads, instead there is a restrained array of dials and toggles. Each car was even supplied with two umbrellas mounted in the boot. A slightly more modern concession is the satellite navigation and standard sports suspension but the overall feeling is of a car that whispers its luxury instead of flashing it about.

When looking for a pre-owned car it may come down to whether you are happy with the first owner’s choices when it came to the massive options list. Most cars have been tastefully appointed however it is worth visually inspecting a car to make sure that the paint and leather combination works for you.

There are usually a few examples for sale at any one time and either a specialist or the Bentley pre-owned division will stock them. There were precious few running changes carried out to the running gear or bodywork so the year of manufacture does not need to affect your buying decision unless you are specifically looking for a newer car.

With only 550 units built, the Brooklands is a rare beast, it still performs and looks the way a top of the range Bentley should. There are few rivals out there that can match it for continent crossing ability.

Common problems

• Parts are still widely available from the manufacturer, as these vehicles have only been out of production for around four years.

• At this age, all Brooklands should have full service histories and verifiable records of any work carried out outside of the standard annual checks.

• The 6.75 V8 is a hard wearing engine, aided by decades of development however they can suffer from head gasket failure. A careful previous owner that has warmed the car up before using the performance will help to extend the car’s life.

• Rust should not be an issue on cars this new and the only thing to keep an eye out for is for evidence of badly repaired accident damage.

• Gearboxes are robust, however continued full bore pull-offs can damage them. Clunky gear changes and hesitation when changing down can indicate a worn transmission

• There are a myriad of electrically powered items on the Brooklands. Check over all of the buttons, toggles and switches to ensure that everything works. The battery should be left on a trickle charger when the car is laid up for longer periods, as flat batteries can cause issues with the electric motors.

• Front and rear seats are electrically adjustable and heated, with the front units having an additional massaging function. These should be checked for correct operation as faults here are pricey to rectify.

Summary and prices

Values of upmarket luxury cars tend to drop fastest in the first few years, and the Brooklands has suffered some depreciation. The earlier 2008 and 2009 examples are still trading for around £110,000 to £140,000. This is about half of what they cost new, and is still relatively good going for a luxury vehicle of this type. There is certainly room for values to drop further, but low production numbers and hand assembled quality indicate that the Brooklands will become a desirable classic in the years to come.
