Records fall at Bonhams’ Paris auction Classic and Performance Car

A significant sale for Bonhams saw some interesting cars go under the hammer on 5 February. Report and highlight video here

For Bonhams, the 5 February Paris Grand Palais sale was significant for a number of reasons. Firstly, it attracted the highest bid for any car sold by the auction house in continental Europe ever - €1,897,500 for a rare 1965 Aston Martin DB5 Convertible.

Secondly, this was also an auction world record price for this model, helped particularly by the fact it was one of only 39 convertibles to originally roll out of the factory in left-hand drive form. Interested parties travelled from around the world, with a telephone bidder finally being knocked off the top spot by a buyer in the room. Aston Martins were obviously in demand, with an earlier DB4 Cabriolet also selling for a respectable €1,219,000.

An ex-Ayrton Senna DAP Kart was also sold at the sale for €42,670. This specially-prepped kart was raced by the three-time F1 World Champion during his final ever kart race in Parma, Italy in 1981.

Another eye-catching sale was the Alfa Romeo 6C-1750 Grand Sport, once driven by Russian racing driver Boris Ivanowski. After some frenzied bidding it sold to a European bidder for €1,184,500. Other significant sales included the ex-Amschel Rothschild 1966 AC Cobra 289 'Mark II' Roadster, which sold for €937, 250, and a London to Brighton 1904 Panhard-Levassor Four-cylinder 35hp Sports Two-Seater which eventually realised €747,500.

Bonhams will follow this successful sale with two more in March, the Amelia Island and Goodwood Members’ Meeting sales.
